IT'S ALL ABOUT GIVING

December 25, marks the happiest day of Filipinos. People spend lots of money just to prepare for that one special day- CHRISTMAS. But do we really know what Christmas is all about or do we celebrate just to eat delicious foods?
December of 2004, Christmas eve a terrible disaster shock the 7,107 islands of the Philippines. A storm hit the province of Aurora and left thousands homeless and hundreds dead. Water from the mountains came crashing in the lowland areas with overwhelming speed. Cut trees from illegal logging crushed everything on it's path- houses, cars or posts, it was all smashed. The storm didn't have mercy, the whole province was devastated.
The news about the calamity spread like a wildfire. Everyone knew about it. and everyone was sorry for those victims. Pity filled the hearts of every Filipino. The urge to help the victims run over my mind. No one cared if it was Christmas because everyone was focused on helping them. People everywhere offered their help- if it's financial or emotional. Donation accounts were opened, donations boxes were distributed and volunteers for the packing of goods were overwhelming. Poor or rich, everyone gave their help as much as they can. No one did it just to raise their popularity rate, it was all for the welfare of the victims.
During this time, unity held the Filipino people to overcome such dilemna. There was just cooperation and peace. It was all for love. It was more of a Christmas rather than celebrating it with delicious foods.
Now as I looked back to that terrible calamity of 2004 I've learned that it was in the unexpected, we the Filipinos realized the true meaning of Christmas.

STOP COMPLAINING!

"Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time spend within is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won't make us happier." A dying patient of pancreatic cancer once said.
Last month, I was just this whiny cat, always complaining on something. If my mother would tell me to do chores, I would get irritated and complain why I have to do those jobs. It's just that I hate chores, I never did loved it. However, I did it anyway, it's one of our household RULES.
I complain a lot at our house. But when it comes to school, I USUALLY don't. There was this day when our teacher "lectured" us, that we should stay on class and cut off the extracurricular activities. When the teacher was saying this, there was just one thing on my mind "IT'S NOT FAIR." It run on my head over and over again. I mean, it's always a toss between academics and extracurricular activities. Why can't it just be both? But it's just so hard to balance everything. you see if I just concentrate on one thing, I would lose the other and that would end up badly. everything should always be in state of equilibrium. But how? How am I supposed to figure this one out? Would the answer just fall out of the sky? I figured ofcourse NOT!
After reading a book titled "The Last Lecture." I finally found the answer. If I keep on com plaining about things instead of giving my time to resolved these dilemmas, I wouldn't suceed on anything. So if I give the effort i put into complaining and apply it to actually solving the problem, then things would turn out fine.

OCTOBER....

October, October, October......The calendar marks the month of October. It just means that our second grading period is over. After two months of hardwork, it's FINALLY over.

It was really hard adjusting during our second quarter because of the new lessons and especially to our hectic schedules. I was about to melt down when we were making our investigatory project. It was really stressful because of the papers and documents we had to fill up. Other documents were even downloaded from the net. And then the most stressful part was to photocopy all of the documents. Not only it was a pain in the head but also a pain in the wallet! But anyway the whole grading period was fun.Especially our activities in TLE. It was kind of fun to just type tags in the notepad and learn the different functions of the tags.

This grading period, I did not only learn about tags or physics or thermochemistry but I've learned to VALUE MY TIME. Each minute-seconds passes and each hour-minutes passes. The hard thing is you can never bring it back. Another grading period is done, graduation day is fast approaching. I'm so excited but at the same time sad.

A friend, a mother, a father and a superhero.

We, Filipinos value education as much as we value our lives. So, it’s no surprise to see our parents working so hard, day and night just to send us a decent school. If possible our parents want us to give the best school, the education and the best teachers.
Today, even with the most sophisticated technology or book, it’s still hard to learn a lesson by yourself. We still need someone who will teach us and guide us in our learning process. No one is capable of understanding a whole new topic without someone guiding him. That’s ridiculous! Do you know why? One reason is that, the moment when we were born, we were already guided by someone-our first teachers, our parents. They thought us how to talk, walk and basically be who we are. Imagine a toddler without a parent in a dining table, would you expect that child would magically know how to use the spoon and fork by just staring at it. Of course not!
After our learning in our home, we jump to another stage of our life and that’s school. Here, it’s all different. At home we learn about values and virtues but at school we learn the “WHY”, the “HOW”, the “WHAT”, the “WHO” and the “WHEN”. Almost everything is gained here. Just like home we have our teachers. Yes sometimes we don’t like them because they’re up-tight and control freaks and most of the time we take advantage of them. And it’s so wrong to do these things to them. They don’t deserve this because they are the ones who shape us. The experiences at school and the wisdom they share, gives us a hint on who we will be someday.
One thing I adore about teachers is that they treat us just like their own child. They care for you and most of all they love you. They’re just like family. I sometimes find it so hard to figure out how our teachers do all the things they do. I mean they teach us, do the grading sheet and sometimes have to listen to our problems. How do they do all these things? May be, it’ in their human nature to be these multi-tasked people. Thinking about it they’re just like a hero. Just call them and they will be there. To comfort you, understand you and give you a love so tender it will blow you away.
I may not now how our teachers do their job so well but one thing’s for sure. For about ten months we stay with them. And with those ten months we gain not just knowledge but a friend, a mother, a father and a superhero as well.

Adapting to Diverse Science Culture for Development

Our world is constantly changing and we must not be left behind.
For us to keep up with the fast pace of the global world, we should embrace SCIENCE CULTURE. Do you know why? Because science have helped us a lot through the past years. From the discovery of cells to the discovery of the human genome, science is continuously helping us to be a better nation.
Now in this global crisis where do we run to but science. Some may disagree with this but you see science is a double-edged blade. It can give us destruction or restoration. It just depends on how we are going to use it. Well, if we abuse the benefits we gain from science then surely it will cause destruction to the world and to us. Just like what we’re doing right now, we are abusing science that’s why we are causing so much damage to mother earth. But as what I said a while ago it’s a double-edged blade. If science is used properly, may be there’s a slight chance we can save our slowly deteriorating world. We just need the knowledge and skill to do this.
So what do you say? The choice is up to us. It’s either we embrace the diverse science culture for our development or we stick to our wrong doings and destroy our one and only mother earth.

Wikang Filipino: Mula Baler Hanggang Buong Bansa

Wikang Filipino: Mula Baler Hanggang Buong Bansa

Philippines is one of the most breathtaking places you’ll ever see. Consisting of 7,107 islands, this country, my country, promises tourists that you’ll never regret visiting. Aside from the beautiful places it exhibits, the Philippine culture will blow you away. Its culture is closely guarded by most natives from different provinces of the country. Of course with different natives there are also different dialects. Almost 80 local dialects are used in the Philippines but only one is named to be our national dialect-“Filipino”.
You see, for us to be able to communicate with one another we use Filipino. Every Pilipino uses it or at least most of the Filipinos. Go to the most northern or southern part of the Philippine Islands and for sure you’ll find someone who speaks Filipino. From north to south, east to west there’s no stopping the Filipino domination. Do you know why? Because we Filipinos, take pride of our language-our personal identity. No one uses it besides us, so if you find somebody speaking one, you’ll he’s a Pinoy. That’s why; Filipino is included in our curriculum. And sure we need to study English for our global competency but Filipino- our mother tongue will always be in our hearts. That’s the Filipino way!

My reflections on what happened in the past 2 months.

It's a start of another chapter in my life. My senior life has just got started and now I believe I have travelled one fourth of the whole journey as a senior. Yes our first quarter is nearing it's end. I can't believe I have learned so many things at a short period of time.
It's 3:10 I'm late for our class. As I arrived in the computer room,it felt so different. I only realized now that everything has changed. The layout of the room, the computers and the teacher. Our new teacher has a different way of teaching than our teachers from the past. She's more on the hands on than the talking and I like it. My favorite lesson was the history of the internet. Can you believe it? I myself can't believe too because I never liked history that much. But there's something with the history of the internet that made me so interested. May be how the US got so jealous with the USSR's Sputnik that they made their own ARPA. Well it's not only through lectures I learn things, I also learn through our "hands on". I was so impressed when I have found out about the "Hole in the wall". Really it was a story to remember.
When your adapting to changes it's normal to have some difficulties or problems. I had problems with our schedule because it was most likely to be disturbed by the different activities of the school just like one time the 1st year political rally I had to miss our class for the said program. Even our teacher sometimes missed our class because of other obligations.
For me to make up with my lessons, I borrow the notes of my classmates and asked what they talked about so I can still keep up.
Now that we're leaving our first quarter I will be as focused as I was before.

Speak in English and Filipino with Kindness

The world now is a global village. English is the language of that village. It has become the global language not merely in every land but in cyberspace. Just check out the internet. In this world everybody is learning English. The race is on to learn to English. We Filipinos can not be left behind. Everybody knows that our English proficiency gives us the competitive edge globally. And as for tagalog it will always be our mother tongue together with the other 87 major dialects we have in the Philippines. Surely, we Filipinos can learn two or more language with pride and confidence.
In connection to this campaign, our school ISNHS has this campaign with the theme"Speak to me in English or Filipino with kindness". For me it only means one thing. Being proficient or good in speaking these languages is not something to bragged but something to be proud of. We don't need to be vaunt to others who don't speak English or Filipino well. But instead help them to learn these languages to be more competitive. It would be a great honor for us to be competent in speaking both languages and it is really something to be proud of.
To all Filipinos out there we don't only need to learn to speak Filipino but English as well. There should be balance between the two. But don't forget that in everything we do, everything we say humility and respect must always be in our heart.

"Wastong Nutrisyon Kailangan, Lifestyle Diseases Iwasan"

In our reilgion Roman Catholic we see life as a gift from God. It's a blessing He had given to us. And the only way we can repay Him is to live our life peacefully and meaningfully. It is also our duty and responsibility to take care of this life. How can we take care of ourselves?
One of the many things we can do is to be healthy. How can we be healthy? We can be healthy by just eating the right food and the right amount of food. How do you know the right amount of food? Well there's this magnificent food pyramid which guide us on how much we should eat foods. It shows the right proportions for every servings. We should all follow this. Remember that everything much and less is bad there should be equilibrium or balance. Next is eating the right food. the right food are the nutritious foods around us. They're very abundant but not all can have it. Why? Just because of their socio-economic status. In the lower stratum people can not afford to buy this nutritious foods, they don't really have that much choice but to buy what they can afford. Some hardly eat thrice a day. So the result-malnourished children. But for me whatever socio-economic status you have, it should not be a hindrance to a healthy body because food is our #1 commodity now. If you don't have the money, find a way to have money. As what they always say"If ther's a will, There's a way."
Is it important to us to be healthy? Yes it is. Being healthy not only physically but also emotionally, mentally and socially is significant. It keeps you away from lifestyle diseases. These diseases are caused by one's unhealthy lifestyle. If possible we should change our lifestyle like for example exercising everyday, eating nutritious foods, don't smoke and don't drink much alcoholic beverages.
In taking good care of our health we don't need to be fancy, we don't need to be rich. Because in our little ways we can already make a change and be healthy people.
So these are the things we can do for God our creator!
